Shared processor scheduling

چکیده
We study the shared processor scheduling problem with a single shared processor where a unit time saving (weight) obtained by processing a job on the shared processor depends on the job. A polynomialtime optimization algorithm has been given for the problem with equal weights in the literature. This paper extends that result by showing an O(n log n) optimization algorithm for a class of instances in which non-decreasing order of jobs with respect to processing times provides a non-increasing order with respect to weights — this instance generalizes the unweighted case of the problem. This algorithm also leads to a 2 -approximation algorithm for the general weighted problem. The complexity of the weighted problem remains open.

Parallel Virtual Memory for Time Shared Environments
This paper analyses the issues involved in providing virtual distributed shared memory for time-shared parallel machines. We study the performance of two di erent page management policies, namely, static and dynamic page allocation under two widely accepted scheduling policies: Gang scheduling and independent processor scheduling. The performance of each page management policy is studied under ...
متن کاملShared multi-processor scheduling
We study shared multi-processor scheduling problem where each job can be executed on its private processor and simultaneously on one of many processors shared by all jobs in order to reduce the job’s completion time due to processing time overlap. The total weighted overlap of all jobs is to be maximized. The problem models subcontracting scheduling in supply chains and divisible load schedulin...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis and Prediction of Processor Scheduling Strategies in Multiprogrammed Shared-Memory Multiprocessors
Small-scale shared-memory multiprocessors are commonly used in a workgroup environment where multiple applications, both parallel and sequential, are executed concurrently while sharing the processors and other system resources. To utilize the processors eeciently, an eeective scheduling strategy is required. In this paper, we use performance data obtained from an SGI multiprocessor to evaluate...

This document describes the processor scheduling framework implemented in the Silicon Graphics IRIX Version 5 operating system. This framework provides the standard features and behavior expected of any UNIX time-sharing system, while adding support for four additional disciplines: a fast-response scheme for lowlatency real-time computing, a time-based regime for throughputoriented real-time co...
متن کاملParallel Loop Scheduling Approaches for Distributed and Shared Memory Systems
In this paper, we propose different approaches for the parallel loop scheduling problem on distributed as well as shared memory systems. Specifically, we propose adaptive loop scheduling models in order to achieve load balancing, low runtime scheduling, low synchronization overhead and low communication overhead. Our models are based on an adaptive determination of the chunk size and an exploit...
